Ryan Schmiege Bio
Ryan Schmiege has been brewing professionally since 2002. He began this journey at Orchard Street Brewery in Bellingham, Washington. From 2003 until the end of 2018 he worked at Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. His responsibilities at Deschutes included Cellar Management, Brewery Operations Management at the brewery’s Portland, Oregon 300+ seat brew pub. He ran the brewery’s barrel program through a growth period of ~700 casks to over 4000 casks and 10 foeders including over 40 different beers and moved the operation from the main brewery to a dedicated fermentation area in an isolated warehouse. Most recently he Managed Special Projects including vinegar production, collaboration brewing and whiskey production, contract brewing investigation, cider production, product development and R&D testing.
Ryan earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and a Postgraduate Certificate in Brewing and Distilling from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, Scotland. He is an active member of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, District Northwest.
Ryan currently resides in Bend, Oregon. His son is a Freshman at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse.
